Even if you are saying the words very softly to yourself in an inaudible tone, the time you are taking to pronounce the words and move your vocal cords is going to slow you down

Is Speed Reading Beneficial?

2016-10-22T09:06:20+00:00

Speed reading is a technique that allows you to take in the printed word just like you take in images while watching a movie. It allows you to read an entire magazine or book at speeds that can amount to two to ten times faster than the average rate. You learn to condition the right side of your brain to view the words instead of sounding them out on the left side. This completely changes how your brain processes information.

One of the major factors in slowing your reading speed down is that your eye is going to do something called, ‘Visual Regression'. This means that when you read a sentence your eye will go back and read words that you have already read. Your mind/eye does this very fast that you are not fully aware of it but it still dramatically slows down your reading speed.

Building Comprehension with Speed Reading

Two Time USA Memory Champion, memory training expert and memory keynote Ron White shares his thoughts on how every learner should develop the comprehension skills speed reading enhances to become a more efficient reader. When we read we use different methods for different subject matter. For instance, when we read a geometry book we read at a slower rate that we would if we were reading the bulleting board. Because the material is more technical you want to soak in the information and sometimes that requires going back over it again. With the bulletin board you read over the notes quickly until something catches your eye that you may want to write down or remember. In both cases you are trying to comprehend what you are reading, just in a different way and at a different speed.
