The Study Less Study Smart Youtube video

His video became on of the most popular Youtube videos on study skills. In this video I break down the main points that I learned from his video.

If you are studying for any type of exam from the bar exam, project management exam, professional certification, history test, college exams or something else these study tips can help you improve your grades and even more importantly what you learn.

11 of the Biggest Tips From Study Less Study Smart video:

  1. Marty teaches a technique that we know as the Pomodoro technique where you break your study time down in to chunks such as 30 minutes and then take a 5 minute break to keep your brain fresh and awake as you are studying.
  2. Teach what you learn to others. This is one of the big values from study groups. Richard Feynman taught that when you teach what you are learning to others you will learn it more. This makes sense but few do it.A good way to implement this study technique is to join a study group or teach your friends and family. If none of these are an option then teach it to the wall or a plant or your pet!
  3. know the difference between recollection and recognition. This is big. Recognition is when you are studying and you turn the page and read something and you think, ‘I know that.’ But what is really going on is that you recognize it. It doesn’t mean that you really know it and when they test time is here it doesn’t mean that you will be able to remember or recollect it.A great way to test yourself if you are just recognizing material or really recollecting it is instead of just reading the information over and over to study close your book and look away and see how much that you can recall. This will really test if you know the material and you can’t trick yourself this way.
  4. Use specific locations for studying. Have a study chair and a study desk so you know when you are sitting there you need to be studying.
  5. Don’t listen to music when you are studying especially if it has lyrics. No matter how good you think you are at multi tasking you will be better when you are focused. If you are singing along to a song as you study are you not fully focused on what you are studying.
  6. Understand the difference between concepts and facts. It is one thing to know the names of the planets in the solar system. It is another to understand how they orbit or interact with the solar system. The goal of learning is understanding. It is important to learn and remember facts but make your goal understanding concepts not learning facts.
  7. To remember more of what you learn in class you should take notes in class but not too many notes. Take enough notes to be your brain triggers after class but don’t take so many notes that you can’t focus during class on what the teacher is saying because you are writing.
  8. Getting enough sleep is key to remembering more of what you study. When you sleep your brain will enter the REM stage of sleep. During this stage the brain will replay what it learned during the day. If you don’t go through enough REM sleep cycles then you will not remember what you learned during the day prior as well. If you want to remember more make sure you sleep well the night after you learn it.
  9. Test your memory by writing what you learned. Do not look at your notes but write as much as you can recall without looking this will test your memory and it will also strengthen your memory to remember more of what you study.
  10. The Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review method is when you survey or look over what you are going to learn and then develop questions that focus your brain. These types of questions could be something like, ‘In this topic what should I look for?’ and then read the material, recite what you learned by teaching it to others or to the wall and then finally review the material.
  11. Use memory training techniques to study less study smart! When you use memory techniques such as the mind palace or the memory palace you are really going to remember more of what you studied.
