Studies all over are reporting that keeping your cell phone glued to your ear can cause brain damage? Can this be true? It seems everyone you see has a phone glued to his or her ears – no matter where you are. How much damage are these devices doing, and can it be reversed?
If you are one of those people who have your cell phone glued to your ear you may not want to hear about recent studies that connect the prolonged use of cell phones and your memory.
According to a study at the University of Washington in Seattle, research done by a team led by Dr. Henry Lai (and published in Bioelectromagnetics), questions as to whether a cell phones held to your ears can cause long-term spatial learning and memory problems.
The team exposed rats to microwaves at the frequency found in cell phones, testing them before and after exposure. After exposure the rats showed slower reflexes and exhibited confusion when shown new spatial patterns on a screen.
At this point Dr. Lai and his team do not feel there is concern for the public safety, but they believe that continued exposure to microwaves could interfere with a chemical in the brain called cholinesterase, which is involved in place learning. There is more research needed to conclude the effects and dangers to memory or accelerated learning. Meanwhile, they recommend the use of hands-free accessories that allow the phone to be held away from the head and ear area, especially for those who are on the phone a great deal of the time.
Hooking up to the blue tooth device that usually comes with a phone, or placing the phone on speaker, especially when driving, will help to keep the microwaves away from the head area and lessen the change of any damage microwaves from the phone can do.
